A second-generation Mexican immigrant narrates his family history, beginning with the journey of his father, Jose (Jacob Vargas), across Mexico to Los Angeles where he meets Maria (Jennifer Lopez) and starts a family. Each subsequent generation contends with political and social hardships, ranging from illegal deportations in the 1940s to racial tensions and gang fights in the '60s and '70s. Yet through it all, or perhaps because of it, the family remains strong.

My Family/Mi Familia | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Gene Seymour Newsday It is evocative well-crafted and performed with verve and passion by a first-rate cast of Latino actors. Rated: 3/4 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review My Family/Mi Familia | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer The warmth of My Family's characters and humor, the lush-ness of its cinematography and local color, and the universality of its family and sibling conflicts, make for pleasurable company. Rated: 3/4 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review My Family/Mi Familia | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Matt Zoller Seitz Dallas Observer One of the most satisfying dramas I've ever seen. Aug 26, 2021 Full Review My Family/Mi Familia | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The film is sweet but never cloying. The continuity doesn't break because the actors - all excellent - convincingly resemble the others who played the same characters in the past. Eye C As a Mexican, I must say I can’t relate with this family, but is also true that there are so many regions in Mexico and every single one of them has his own forms and manners, the thing that brings all Mexicans together is that we are so damn loud. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Bethany W A classic Mexican/Chicano film! If you're into the Chicano and Mexican culture, I recommend watching this classic. Not going to lie, it starts off a little cheesy, but it gets better and better as you keep watching it. Just like the other reviews said, this is definitely accurate to the Mexican/Chicano culture in LA. Overall, this is a great movie. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Francis Ford Coppola and director Gregory Navas tell a pretty satisfying story of three generations of Mexican-American families. They want to live their best lives possible without hurt, heartache, or hardship. It doesn't always come easy since the main father narrates their entire journey starting in the 1930s all the way to the 1990s. Some of the siblings want to be married, have a family while others devote themselves to god or living the life of crime in order to not fall to expected lifestyles of their parents. Each era is different affecting each member. They have ideas, passions, dreams but also obstacles and challenges whether personally or politically. A pretty large cast of unknown Latino actors minus Jimmy Smits and Jennifer Lopez. Still they honestly feel like a real extended family able to go through the many shortcomings anyone has dealt with. Every family has their beginnings, legacy, and end but none of them can be told they each didn't leave a part of themselves leaving an impact on all their lives. Anyone's roots can be traced back as far as possible. Whether you're Mexican or not every family member is just as important as the next before or after. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie right here is amazing. The way they portray the characters and how their stories are told is amazing. Made me cry, laugh and smile. Absolute must-watch.
